Favorite type of writing

Writing is something I definitely don't do often so I enjoy reading rather than writing. My favorite type of writing is fiction. Fiction is something I've always enjoyed reading, it greatly captured my attention rather than poetry, non-fiction, or any other type of writing. Fiction shows this great interest in a story of all the possibilites that could or couldn't happen to anyone or anything.

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is the opening line from one of my favorite books of all time. This line may not capture great attention but it is highly well recognized. The Great Gatsby is a well-known book and represents an era that was way before my own time. It represents the jazz era and has a great story to tell. This is a great example of a fiction story which I enjoy reading the most.

OK, so tell me why you think this opening line works -- what about the style/technique makes it effective and memorable?
